Updated: · General information, not tax or legal advice.

Yes, you can form a US LLC from Egypt entirely online, and Egyptian residents can open a Mercury account for it, because Egypt is not on Mercury’s prohibited list. The LLC gives you access to Stripe US, Amazon.com and US clients that Egyptian companies cannot reach directly. The real work is on the Egyptian side: getting dollars into your bank account cleanly, living with card limits, and declaring the income to the Egyptian Tax Authority.

Why founders in Egypt form a US LLC

Egypt has one of the largest freelance workforces in the region: developers, designers, video editors, translators and customer-support teams working for clients in the US and the Gulf. Local payment tools such as Paymob, Fawry, Kashier and InstaPay are excellent for selling in Egyptian pounds, but they do not solve selling in dollars to the world. That is where a US LLC for Egyptian residents comes in. Common reasons to open an LLC in the USA from Egypt:

  • Stripe. Egypt is not a Stripe country. A US LLC with an EIN and US bank account can apply for Stripe US, which matters for SaaS, online courses and subscriptions.
  • Upwork and Fiverr at agency level. Freelancers who grow into small teams want to invoice as a company and receive ACH payments. See our guide for Upwork and Fiverr freelancers.
  • Amazon.com and US e-commerce. Amazon.eg serves Egypt, but selling to American buyers works best with a US entity.
  • US clients who prefer contracting with a US company rather than an individual abroad.

Receiving money in Egypt: getting USD home legally

This is the part that is truly Egyptian. Since the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) moved to a flexible exchange rate in March 2024, the gap between the bank rate and the old parallel market largely closed, which makes official channels the sensible choice again. A typical path looks like this:

  1. Clients pay your US LLC (Stripe US, PayPal business, Upwork, bank transfer).
  2. The money sits in the LLC’s US account, for example Mercury.
  3. You send an international USD wire to your own USD account at an Egyptian bank such as NBE, Banque Misr, CIB or QNB Egypt. You can keep it in dollars or convert to EGP at the bank rate.

Practical points Egyptian freelancers learn quickly:

  • Open a USD current account first. Incoming USD wires to an EGP-only account are converted automatically. Ask your bank which documents it wants for freelance or business income (contracts, invoices, LLC documents).
  • Card limits change. During the 2023–2024 currency crunch, banks sharply cut foreign-currency spending and overseas ATM limits on EGP cards. In 2025 the CBE eased several of these rules, and NBE and CIB cut their foreign-currency card fees from 5% to 3%. Limits still differ by bank and card, so for paying US software and ads, a virtual card from the LLC’s US account is often simpler than your Egyptian card.
  • Mercury cards. Egypt is not on Mercury’s lists of restricted card countries, so a physical card can normally be mailed; virtual cards work immediately.
  • Payoneer is widely used in Egypt for Upwork, Fiverr and Amazon payouts, with withdrawals to Egyptian banks.

PayPal in Egypt

PayPal works in Egypt, with a twist. PayPal’s Egypt page says that to receive payments you must link either a Visa card issued in Egypt or a US bank account, and that your available balance is moved automatically at the start of each month, with manual withdrawals also possible. For a US LLC, the usual setup is a separate US PayPal business account in the company’s name, paying out to the LLC’s US bank. Read our PayPal and payment gateways guide.

Which banks and payment tools work for residents of Egypt

Provider Status for Egyptian residents (October 2026)
Mercury Egypt is not on the prohibited list. Physical card mailing is not restricted for Egypt; virtual cards available.
Wise Egypt is not on Wise’s list of addresses that cannot get USD account details. Confirm when you apply for the LLC.
Payoneer Available and popular; withdrawals to Egyptian banks.
Stripe Not available to Egyptian companies. A US LLC can apply for Stripe US.
PayPal Egyptian accounts receive via an Egypt-issued Visa card or a US bank account. The LLC opens its own US business account.

Taxes in Egypt and in the US (short, hedged, not tax advice)

In Egypt: resident individuals are taxed on income earned in Egypt, and on income earned abroad when their centre of commercial or professional activity is in Egypt. For a freelancer living in Cairo or Alexandria, profits from a US LLC you run from home are therefore likely within Egyptian tax, at progressive rates up to 27.5%. The Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) has been pushing freelancers and content creators to register, and Law 6 of 2025 introduced a simplified regime for small businesses with annual turnover up to EGP 20 million, taxed on turnover at low rates (reported from 0.4% to 1.5%). Whether you register as a freelancer or under the simplified regime, and how the LLC’s income is reported, is a question for an Egyptian accountant.

In the US: the US and Egypt have an income tax treaty, signed in 1980. It mainly affects US withholding on passive income such as dividends and royalties. A single-member LLC owned by an Egyptian resident with no US trade or business usually owes no US federal income tax, but it must file Form 5472 with a pro forma 1120 every year, even with zero income; the penalty starts at 25,000$. See our Form 5472 guide.

Step by step: how to form a US LLC from Egypt

  1. Choose a state and package. New Mexico: Starter 249$, Builder 349$, Diamond 499$. Wyoming: Starter 299$, Builder 399$, Diamond 499$. State fee and first-year registered agent included.
  2. Documents. Your passport is the ID US providers want; the national ID card is not enough on its own, so renew a passport that is close to expiry. For proof of address, an electricity, gas or landline bill is usually in Arabic and may need an English translation. A bank statement issued in English is often the easiest option.
  3. State filing. Approval usually takes 5–7 business days.
  4. EIN. No SSN required (see EIN without SSN). Timing depends on the IRS. Builder and Diamond include the EIN and bank-application help.
  5. Bank and payments. Apply to Mercury with your Egyptian address, then connect Stripe US, PayPal or your marketplaces. Diamond adds Stripe setup done with you, an Operating Agreement and a US phone number.
  6. Every year. File Form 5472 + 1120 (99$ per tax year; first year included in Diamond) and renew at 129$/yr in New Mexico or 229$/yr in Wyoming.

Mistakes and scams Egyptian founders should avoid

  • Selling dollars outside the banking system. It may look tempting when rates move, but it creates no paper trail for your bank or the ETA. Keep income flowing through your own accounts.
  • Renting someone’s Stripe, PayPal or Payoneer account. Account rental is common in Egyptian freelance groups and ends with frozen balances and no recourse.
  • Using a US address as your home address on bank or Stripe forms. Providers verify residence; tell the truth about living in Egypt.
  • Ignoring Egyptian tax because the company is American. The LLC does not change where you live.
  • Forgetting Form 5472 in a year with no US income.
  • Trusting offers of “guaranteed Stripe approval in 48 hours”. No formation company controls Stripe or the IRS.

New Mexico or Wyoming for founders in Egypt?

New Mexico is the practical pick for most Egyptian freelancers and small teams: no annual report, no yearly state fee and a 129$/yr renewal. Wyoming makes sense if you value its reputation and accept the 60$ yearly report fee (included in our 229$/yr renewal). Both work identically with Mercury and Stripe. Compare them in New Mexico vs Wyoming. Working from the Gulf instead? See a US LLC from Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions

Can Egyptian residents open a Mercury account for a US LLC?

Yes, Egypt is not on Mercury’s prohibited list, and Mercury does not restrict card mailing to Egypt. Every application is still reviewed, so apply with accurate documents and a clear business description.

How do I receive USD in Egypt from my US LLC?

Wire USD from the LLC’s US account to your own USD account at an Egyptian bank such as NBE, Banque Misr or CIB. Keep the funds in dollars or convert at the bank rate, and keep invoices to explain the source.

Does PayPal work in Egypt?

Yes. Egyptian personal accounts receive money by linking an Egypt-issued Visa card or a US bank account. Your US LLC should have its own US business PayPal account paying out to its US bank.

Do I pay tax in Egypt on my US LLC income?

Probably. Egypt taxes residents on foreign income when their centre of activity is in Egypt, and the ETA is actively registering freelancers and content creators. Ask an Egyptian accountant whether the simplified regime under Law 6 of 2025 suits you.

Is there a US–Egypt tax treaty?

Yes, signed in 1980. It mostly affects withholding on US dividends and royalties. A service LLC owned by an Egyptian resident with no US activity usually owes no US income tax but still files Form 5472 yearly.

Can I use my Egyptian bank card to pay for US software and ads?

Often, but foreign-currency limits and fees vary by bank and have changed several times since 2023. Many founders pay US subscriptions with a virtual card from the LLC’s US account instead.
